Oksana Khoroshun is one of the founders of the festival, which originated in 2023 as a form of music therapy for children during the war and has since evolved into a large-scale international event with hundreds of participants.

In 2024, a Ukrainian record for simultaneous percussion performance was set during the festival, involving 104 record-holders. By 2026, this record had evolved into the festival's culminating event — FREEDOM BEAT — a final mass performance where hundreds of participants unite in a single rhythm. That year, a new Ukrainian record was set: 250 performers playing a single rhythmic composition simultaneously on various percussion instruments on one stage.

The competition covers various genres: rock, pop, jazz, Latin, fusion, classical percussion  and ethnic percussion. The festival’s concert program features performances by solo artists and bands that are prominent figures in the contemporary music scene. Over the past four years, the Drum Island Fest stage has hosted outstanding musicians, including Usein Bekirov – three-time Grammy nominee (Ukraine), Pavlo Halytskyi Trio (Pavlo Halytskyi, Dennis Adu, Oleksandr Yemets) (Ukraine), Christin Neddens (Germany), Alirio Torrealba (Venezuela), Myshko Birchenko, Yevhen Puhachov ("Hyphen Dash", Ukraine), Dislocados (Ukraine), and Oleksandr Seleznov et al. (Ukraine).

The festival's partners include Drumeo, TAMA, ROHEMA, MEINL, GRETSCH, SILESIA DRUM, HUDSON MUSIC, ALIGHT, MITSUBISHI MOTORS, Radisson BLU Kyiv Podil City Centre, 1+1 MEDIA, C-COMMS.

Drum Island Fest will celebrate its 5th anniversary from April 9 to 11, 2027.
