Duo Gelland, reinventors of the violin duo, received the Annual German Record Critics' Award 2008 with James Dillon's Traumwerk. Collaborating with Hans-Joachim Hespos, Bernd Franke, Birgitte Alsted and others, 200 dedications, including 8 double concerti, contribute to their repertory.
soloed in Tonhalle Zürich, Grünewaldsalen Stockholm, the Berliner Philharmonie, both halls. With RIAS Kammerchor under Hans Christoph Rademann they premiered concertante works for violin duo and choir. Deeply interested in Zeitgeist they revive gems from the violin duo's golden age. Scandinavian theatre directors and choreographers do crossover projects with them.
Their method of meeting school children with new art music is subject to university research in Germany and the US. Duo Gelland's artistry is described in the encyclopedias Die Violine and MGG. They perform on their Giovanni Baptista Rogeri, Brescia 1703 and Giovanni Baptista Gabrielli, Florenz 1752.
Quotes from composers:
”For me, Cecilia and Martin Gelland belong to the most engaged and charismatic interpreters of contemporary music on the European arena ... an existentialistic power of interpretation which one very rarely experiences.” Bernd Franke
”Ihr geigenspiel hat mich fasziniert – so reich differenziert und von großer plastischer ausdrucks- weite - UNgewöhnlich!” Hans-Joachim Hespos
”I was so impressed by your grasp of Traumwerk in particular the fantasy of the work. It was chamber music playing as it should be, disciplined and spontaneous, intimate and yet generous.” James Dillon
